Ellu Urundai - Sesame Balls
A traditional desert from deep South.... Easy to prepare, good for health and has medicinal properties . To add on this is a diabetic friendly food. Its better if prepared with karupatti (palm jaggery) instead of jaggery .Karupatti vellam is a sap extract from palm tree. This is rich in calcium ,iron ,minerals and vitamins. We can substitute this for sugar in tea and coffee. We need to powder this by putting in a thick polythene cover and beat on with a chapatti roller .Now for this sesame balls we need to grind the required amount of karupatti in mixer. To make a fine powder of it .

Ellu urundai :
Ingredients :
Sesame seeds( ellu ) black - 300 gms
Groundnut(roasted) - 100gms(optional)
Cardamom powder - a pinch
karupatti vellam ( powdered ) : 250 gms
Ghee - 1 cup
Preparation :
We cant use the sesame as such from the packet it'l be adulterated with small stones and mud balls so need to clean it before we use for the preparation.
Heat a kadai .When its well hot just add the sesame to the dry kadai . We can see the sesame gets splattering when its roasted. Then remove off the kadai and transfer to a plate and let it cool. Now remove of the waste of sesame and now use the cleaned sesame.
(now the sesame and karupatti to be made to powder together in the same shot if you use jaggery)
Then grind sesame seeds separately. And karupatti separately... Then bring them together in a large bowl.
Never grind them together coz they may not get grinded into fine powder. Grinding separate is good. Now empty the contents into a large open and wide base bowl.
Now make powder of groundnut. Add this to the bowl.
Add cardamom powder and heat Ghee to melt and add to the bowl.
(heat up Ghee to warm even if it's in melted consistency)
Mix well so that they will gather up.
